Review – Lavola – This Book Is My Cowardice

You remember that group of kids that sat in the back of chemistry class in high school? The ones that didn’t want to mix chemical A with chemical B to get the same results as everyone else. The kids that grabbed every chemical they could to form an unknown substance with sometimes brilliant and always unpredictable results. That’s Lavola.

Lavola is a band that can’t be easily defined and definitely doesn’t restrict itself with any boundaries or typical conventions. Julian’s vocals run through various stages across the eight track album. Vocals go from being soft and almost eerie to emitting screams at a frantic pace. He’s at his best in songs like “7 Steps To Hell” when he uses all of his assets without overstaying his welcome in any one area. During some moments he even brought comparisons of Billy Corgan to mind.

This cd isn’t going to hit with everyone. It’s definitely experimental in nature and can get a bit chaotic at times. The biggest compliment I can give it is that it held my attention through the duration of my listen. It had me intently listening to what was around the next corner song after song. That’s Lavola’s biggest strength. The ability to draw people in and keep them guessing where the path will take them. I definitely recommend giving this one a go, especially if you’re tired of the every day formula .
