SFL Music Magazine – Album Review of LAVOLA – Black Sea of Trees

Lavola’s Black Sea of Trees is South Florida indie rock at its finest. The bands disc sounds highly influenced by Amnesiac and Kid A era Radiohead with a bit of desert rock, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and eastern influence in to spice things up.

The first two tracks, “The Philosopher’s Daughter,” and the oddly titled “Woman Gives Birth to Chair,” cultivate a heavy middle eastern sense with a punchiness reminiscent of Queens of the Stoneage. The title track, a haunting an atmospheric tune is vocalist/guitarist Julian Cires flanked by his guitar and sounds that add an eerie quality to the song.

The final cut on the disc has a jam- like quality to it that makes you think that live, this song has to be a monstrous opus. All in all, as far as debut discs’ go, Lavola score an A with Black Sea of Trees for great songs that are different, but familiar enough to where you don’t want to take the disc and shoot it out of your car window with the thought of why did I buy this disc again?
